Narrative

Go to our Media Magazine archive (issue MM79) and read the feature All Too Well on Taylor Swift and how she controls her own narrative. Answer the following questions: 

1) Why is Taylor Swift re-recording her earlier albums? 
She is re-recording her music as a record company had bought all her music, therefore she wants to reclaim her music back and keep her music solely to her page.

2) Why did Taylor Swift choose to make the short film 'All Too Well'? 
In order to demonstrate her ability to control her own narrative.

3) What other examples are provided in the article of Taylor Swift using media to construct her own image? 
Her albums are available there and she directs all of her content aswell.

Taylor Swift textual analysis

Work through the following tasks to complete your textual analysis of Taylor Swift's website and social media. 

1) Go to Taylor Swift's website. What do you notice about the media language choices - text, font, images, page design, links?
There is a cetral image of Taylor Swift in a golden outfit. There is a colour scheme of gold in the whole image including the typgraphy stating "A Showgirl"
The font is sans serif which presents her as a modern singer known worldwide.
There is also "shop now" "sign up" and "tour dates"  which reflect her capitalist ideologies, allowing her to generate profit.

2) Now visit her Eras tour microsite. What do you notice about the construction of this site in terms of images and website conventions? 
Its an unconventional cover style ( Neale's repetition and difference theory) that incorporates a monochromatic retro colour scheme in order to represent Taylor Swift throughout her eras. The grainy and nostalgic display reveals her ability to reinvent her self. Additionally, on the top right there is a variety of social media iconography to show her presence on different platforms and increase her viewership as well as profit.

3) Visit Taylor Swift's Twitter feed. Analyse her use of tweets/posts - are they promoting her music, her tour, or something else? Can you find any that are socially or politically oriented? 
There is use of logo and banner image which reveals consistency of her brand era across different platforms. The constant use of the same bio allows her to promote her new album the 95.2m followers shows her large fanbase and her star power. She has also posted with the Royals to indirectly promote her tour and through "m8" she is trying to use cultural appreciation dialect to appear relatable and create a sense of authenticity. She also has political influence by endorsing Kamala Harris.

4) Look at Taylor Swift's Instagram account. What do you notice about the selection and construction of images, reels and posts?  
She has a royal picture as a selfie to create originality and show mutual beneficial opportunities and the fact that these pictures are from her Wembley tour it shows how monarchy is in tune with modern society. Additionally, the top three pinned posts are in reference to her new album. Through the bio, she has also incorporated a link which provides merch, therefore reinforcing capitalistic ideology.

5) Research Taylor Swift across any other social media accounts - e.g. Facebook. Do you notice any differences in how she represents herself on different platforms? Comment on text, images or tone/content. 
Instagram:
Captions are often short, poetic, used with emojis and she chooses words carefully.
Image- Selfies, tour visuals.
Her tiktok page is quite similr to her insta page, promiting all her albums with new album releases at the top, Additionally she has multilple followers however zero following.
